New Squeeze Film Damper Introduced
|
BSi is pleased to announce that new damping sections
are available for our complete line
of spin test drives, from the largest capacity electric drives to our 200,000 rpm air
turbines. The newly developed Squeeze Film Damper eliminates sub-synchronous whirl
and is extremely tolerant of imbalance.
Versions of the new damper have been developed for the complete spectrum of spin test
speeds and corresponding spindle diameters. Model 4100, illustrated below with a
carbon face seal, is designed for 9/16 inch to 0.75 inch spindle diameters and
speeds to 50,000 rpm.
Model 4100, coupled to a 30,000 rpm / 0.75 inch spindle drive, allowed us recently to
successfully spin an unbalanced 875 lbm (400 kg) impeller to its target speed of over
8000 rpm. The actual imbalance was 126 oz.in. (91 kg.mm)! Such an imbalance is
huge. If the bearings were rigidly constrained, the radial force generated at speed would
have been over 14,500 lbf (65,000 N).
These dampers will be incorporated into all our new drives and are available for retrofit
into existing units currently in service. Contact us for further details and pricing.
