Barbour Stockwell Success Stories
| Here's an inside look at how BSi helps industry leaders all over
the world with spin test products, systems, software and engineering services that are second to none.
Siemens Power Generation Berlin, Germany
The world's largest spin test facility, this installation has been designed
and built for testing gas turbine rotor disks up to 2500 mm in diameter and 12 tons in weight.
The facility employs a 160 kW, 10,000 rpm motor drive system. In addition, the chamber in which the
rotors can be chilled to subzero temperatures or heated prior to the spin test. Disk bore temperatures
are transmitted to the control system via a drive mounted telemetry system.

Hamilton Sundstrand - Windsor Locks, CT USA
Two BSi facilities are employed for overspeed tesing of precision aerospace compressors and expanders.
Moreover, to maximize flexibility and production throughput, each spin chamber accomodates two air turbine
drives. One is designed for driving smaller rotors to 170,000 rpm. The other has a greater capacity and
minimizes test times for larger workpieces.

ABB Turbo Systems Baden, Switzerland
This facility is used in the manufacture of large turbocharger rotors. The electric drive system
is capable of 40,000 rpm and generates 160 kW. An industrial computer is incorporated for test
parameter storage and data aquisition. The test chamber diameter is 1600 mm.
Nuovo Pignone - Florence, Italy
This facility is used by Nuovo Pignone, GE Oil & Gas, to test gas turbine rotors up to 1600 mm in
diameter at elevated or subzero temperatures. Disk bore temperatures are transmitted to the control
system via a drive mounted telemetry system. The 160 kW electric drive system has a maximum speed
capability of 40,000 rpm and may be used for testing compressor impellers as well as the gas turbine
disks.
Pratt & Whitney Aircraft West Palm Beach, FL USA
The facility supplied to Pratt & Whitney is currently being used to test NASA's Space Shuttle
main engine rotors. The critical nature of this flight hardware is reflected in the stringent demands
placed on the test equipment and controls. The facility is air turbine driven and incorporates a liquid
nitrogen soak tank in the 1000 mm diameter chamber for spin testing at cryogenic temperatures.
Demag DeLaval Turbomachinery Corp - Trenton, NJ USA
Demag DeLaval employs one of our air turbine drive systems to test impellers to speeds of up to
30,000 rpm. The test chamber diameter is 1600 mm. The control system includes a RS-232 port for
communication with any computer for test parameter storage and data acquisition.

GEVA
(Gesellschaft für Entwicklung und Versuch Aldershof)
Berlin, Germany
GEVA currently employs two 40,000 rpm and one 65,000 rpm FAST facilities at Berlin in support of the
development of aircraft engines. The electric drive systems generate 160 kW for rapid LCF testing of
rotor disks in the 1600 mm chambers. The facility also incorporates heating systems for testing
at temperatures to 800 °C.
